Reinventing Battery Recycling for a Sustainable Future
With the BattREvision lighthouse project, a research laboratory for battery dismantling and recycling lithium-ion batteries are being created at SIPBB, which is unique in Switzerland.
Batteries are currently one of the largest global growth markets. With the worldwide ramp-up of electromobility in the coming years, the demand for critical resources such as copper, cobalt, nickel, or lithium will intensify.
The production of batteries is highly energy-intensive, and the mining and processing of raw materials consume much energy on the one hand and produce many greenhouse gas emissions on the other.
Recycling batteries is a major challenge, but it offers the opportunity to recover over 90% of the raw materials. In the process, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by more than 75% compared to processing new raw materials.

Battery recycling industry as an opportunity for Switzerland
In the BattREvision project, we are building five physical pilots that represent the platform for testing the individual process steps. This includes the collection, sorting, disassembly and recycling. In this Living Lab, SMEs and startups can test their products and develop new innovative applications together with SIPBB.
