About SBTC

Powering the Future of Battery Innovation

The Swiss Battery Technology Center is at the forefront of developing advanced solutions for battery performance, recycling, and sustainability – powering the transition to cleaner mobility and a circular energy future.

We pioneer innovative methods to disassemble and analyze batteries, unlocking pathways for reuse and circular design. Using cutting-edge testing, we uncover insights into battery performance, lifespan, and application potential. Our system engineering pushes boundaries with lightweight materials and additive manufacturing – driving the next generation of sustainable energy solutions.

Main Facilities

Focus Areas

The diverse research activities of the Swiss Battery Technology Center

Automated Battery Sorting & Disassembly

We’re tackling one of the biggest challenges in EV recycling: dismantling batteries that are still mostly done by hand – slow, risky, and hard to scale. With the help of our in-house multidisciplinary team and close collaboration with partners, we’ve built an automated dismantling pipeline using robotics, AI, and smart tools. It’s already running – and we’re improving it every day to make the process safer, faster, and smarter.

Battery recycling

Not every battery needs to be recycled, but to know that, it first needs to be safely opened and assessed.
Our automated dismantling process plays a critical role in battery circularity. By carefully disassembling EV packs and exposing their internal state, we enable reliable decisions on whether a battery should be reused, repurposed, or fully recycled.

Battery Testing

We test batteries to assess performance, safety, and lifespan under various conditions. These insights help determine their suitability for different applications – from mobility to stationary storage.

Application Integration & System Engineering

We design complete battery systems for real-world use. By focusing on lightweight materials, additive manufacturing, and optimal battery technologies, we contribute to lowering CO₂ emissions and replacing combustion-based systems. Successfully realized examples include a battery system engineered for circular economy principles using additive manufacturing, and a hybrid emergency power system capable of reducing fuel consumption by over 80 %.
